KTM EXC speedo

The grey KTM speedo unit 54814069000 is mounted on 2005-2014 EXC range. It is a fairly basic speedo which shows shows km and hours and have some nice functions for timekeeping during enduros. It is no swiss timepiece but at least it is not as moisture sensitive as the rest of the KTM program.
The unit is powered by the bikes 12V but has an CR2430 battery for backup. If you by accident try to fit a CR2450 battery it will fit just fine until you tighten the rear door of the unit when the screen cracks....

Changing wheel size
The unit has an adjustable wheel circumference so it can be used both for 17" supermoto wheels and 21" offroad wheels. The used wheel circumference is seen on the screen during startup. The procedure to change it is as following:
  • Locate the 3 pin connector coming out of the speedo and unplug  it.
  • Wake the speedo up by rotating the front wheel.
  • Press and hold the right button marked O. The screen will change and you enter the settings menu.
  • Select WS and use +- buttons to adjust. 2250 for 21" and 1882 for 17"
  • When the correct size is obtained, release buttons and let the unit go to sleep.
  • Plug the 3 pin connector back in.
ODO adjustment
I get a lot of bikes into the shop where the speedo unit shows very few hours compared to the general condition of the bike, at times it is just an abusive owner and at times the odo has been recalibrated.  The unit is made by M.A.E. elettronica in italy and uses a pic16LF87 for its calculations. This is a quite common dash pic which can be read by several "dash correction" suites for those into changing odo mileage. Be aware if you plan that! The unit has a feature that the memory is wiped when the unit is read or flashed so the unit goes back to virgin 0km and 0h. And quite a few units have been bricked after futile flash attempts. On initial startup after a wipe it is  possible to insert any random km you like. The h counter is non adjustable and will still show 0h. So if you find a bike with an imbalance in km and h it is most likely reset at some time...

If you wish to reset your odo and h meter, don't open the unit to read the pic just follow the steps below:

Reset procedure:
- Disconnect wheel sensor
- Remove battery
- Press and hold all 3 buttons +-O
- Install battery
- Release buttons
On initial startup after reset hold down O button and the numbers will start flashing, use +- to step to the wanted setting.

So if you are just a buyer of a 2005-2014 KTM EXC, never ever take the hour and km as a truth, looking at the condition of the bike is still the only way to judge the mileage.....
